Kanchenjunga stands about seventy kilometres north of the estate, and on a clear day it fills the sky above the far ridges: a wall of snow and rock, with the peaks of the range strung out on either side. Every room in the Main Bungalow was built to face it.
The clear months
The mountain is most reliable from October to early December, when the monsoon has washed the air clean, and again from February into April, when the mornings are crisp and the rhododendrons are out in the forest above us. In the monsoon, June to September, it hides for days at a time, though the garden is at its greenest and the tea at its most abundant.
The best hour
Sunrise. The summits catch the light while the valleys below are still in shadow, and for a few minutes the snow turns pink, then gold, then white. We bring bed tea to your room before dawn on request, and the front lawn and the Rungeet verandah are the best places to stand.
If you would rather see it from higher up, we can arrange the early drive to Tiger Hill, where on a good morning Everest is visible too.
