The bungalow's corner suite, with a bay window square to Kanchenjunga and a fire laid every evening.
The Kanchenjunga Suite takes the south-east corner of the Main Bungalow, and its bay window was set by the estate's first manager to frame the mountain. On a clear morning the snows turn pink before six; we leave binoculars and a hand-drawn chart of the peaks on the sill. The room is wide and high-ceilinged, with a carved teak four-poster, a writing desk that has been in the house since the 1920s and a sitting area around a wood-burning fireplace that is laid every evening at dusk. Floors are the original Burma teak, softened with Tibetan rugs from the Darjeeling bazaar. The bathroom has a cast-iron slipper bath and a separate shower, Himalayan herbal toiletries made for us in Kalimpong, and a heated towel rail for the cold months. Bed tea, a pot of the estate's first flush, arrives at the hour you choose.
